Choosing the Right Ceiling Rose for Your Room and Chandelier

2 min readLast updated:

How to choose the diameter, shape and finish of a ceiling rose to suit your room size, chandelier and ceiling height, with a guide table and tips for previewing before you buy.

Choosing the Right Ceiling Rose for Your Room and Chandelier

Choose a ceiling rose larger than the chandelier so that a decorative border shows around it, and a diameter that suits the ceiling area. As a rough guide, not a fixed rule: 50 to 80 cm for small rooms, 80 to 120 cm for medium rooms and 120 to 150 cm for large halls.

Guide table for diameter

Approximate room areaSuggested rose diameterNote
Up to 12 m² (e.g. 3x4 m)50 to 80 cmSmall bedrooms, kids rooms, entrances
12 to 25 m²80 to 120 cmLiving rooms and master bedrooms
Over 25 m²120 to 150 cmHalls and large reception rooms

These numbers are approximate and your eye has the final say. Our GRP ceiling roses range from about 50 to 150 cm.

Three factors

Room size. A small rose in a big room looks lost, and a big rose in a small room weighs the ceiling down. Keep some clear ceiling around the rose so its edge does not touch the walls or the cornice.

Chandelier size. A border of the rose should show around the chandelier base. A 60 cm chandelier on a 60 cm rose shows nothing, while a 90 or 100 cm rose gives it a balanced frame. Measure the chandelier width, not only its length.

Ceiling height. On low ceilings prefer a shallow relief and a moderate diameter; high ceilings can carry deeper relief and larger diameters without feeling heavy.

Shape: round or elongated?

Most roses are round and suit square rooms and centred chandeliers. Some designs have non-circular dimensions such as 100x70 cm, which suit rectangular rooms or a dining area over a long table. Pick the shape that follows the room or the furniture beneath.

Finish and colour

The roses accept any paint type, such as plastic paint, glaze and gilded finishes. On a white ceiling, a rose in the same colour shows the relief through shadow only, a slightly darker tone brings out the detail, and gilding gives a rich classic look. You can complete the frame with GRP ceiling corners in the same colour.

Preview before you buy

Cut a circle of card at the suggested diameter, tape it to the ceiling around the chandelier position and look at it from the doorway and from where you sit. This simple test shows which diameter works before you order.

Installation and safety

  • Roses are fixed with a wall plug and screw plus silicone, as each description states; use a finishing technician for large diameters.
  • Hang the chandelier from a hook fixed in the structural ceiling, not from the rose, which is a decorative piece.
  • Consult your electrician before installation about the cable outlet and length.
  • Some pieces are described as interior decor only, so check the description.

Designs to look at include Dantella, Asala, Julia and Cleopatra; each page lists the exact size.

Frequently asked questions

What are the smallest and largest diameters available?

Diameters range from about 50 to 150 cm, and some designs have non-circular dimensions. Check the size on each rose's page.

Is a rose suitable for a low ceiling?

Yes, but choose a moderate diameter and a shallow relief so it does not weigh the ceiling down. Try a cardboard circle on the ceiling before ordering.

Can I fit a rose without a chandelier?

Yes, a rose is a decorative piece in itself and can dress the middle of the ceiling even if the lighting comes from elsewhere.

How is the rose fixed?

With a wall plug and screw plus silicone, as stated in the product description. We recommend a finishing technician and hanging the chandelier from a separate structural hook.
